For an iPod Nano 8Gb what encoding is better AIFF or AAC?

I want something with superb quality. I'm not that concerned about memory space since I have an 8Gb Nano. Also how do you know that the bit rate is higher? Does it have a bigger number? Like in AAC there is two options 128 kbps or 256 kbps what is better?
